Taste

One's taste, pretty much like himself, changes from time to time. Take a look..

What may appear to be simple plate of fishball/crabstick noodles may not be as simple as it seems.

As I cooked this, I couldn't help to think how much my liking or my dismay for certain items have changed tremendously.

Instance 1: I always had this mad craving for fishballs back when I was 5~8. I would insist that fishballs must be added to my instant noodles, failing which I would not eat. Now, I have fishballphobia. Unless the fish ball is big and nicely shaped (for example the size of a ping-pong, yes there are such large fish balls), I would not be interested to actually eat it.

Instance 2: Crabsticks. A love-hate relationship. I used to dislike it, but my sister would always want to eat it. Sometimes, being the bully I used to be, I would compete with her over crabsticks found in a bowl of soup, and even if I didn't want to eat it, I would take it, take a bite and leave it on the table. Subsequently, there was a time I really liked it, especially roasting it, which gives it a nice crunchy skin, and soft artificial crab meat inside. However, eating too many at one go would make you very sick of it, and that was what I felt after eating 3 right after one another.

Instance 3: The yellow noodles. Ordinary it may seem, this carbo-intense starch supplement was one of the earliest staple food I was introduced to other than rice. Again, when cooked nicely, it leaves a faint fragance of starch (yes that distinctive noodle smell), and is actually a joy to chew on. However, cooking it for too long renders it almost semi-liquid, and that makes it disgusting. Furthermore, after being exposed to more of its counterparts (for instance kuey teow, mee pok, mee kia, beetaimug etc), I have found more choices and has rarely been eating this yellow noodles unless there's no other viable alternatives.

Instance 4: Tomato ketchup! As a staunch Only-Chili supporter, I found myself turning to tomato ketchup recently! Yes, that sweet red sauce that makes your noodles taste sweet instead of spicy the way I like it. Then again, now that I realise, it does give the plate of food another dimension of taste, which can be quite refreshing at times. Hahaha

Well, so much thoughts for a plate of food. Frankly speaking, anything goes when one's hungry. Even stuff you usually won't even be tempted to try all become something heavenly.
