Suzhou was not too bad for a weekend getaway, other than the very hot weather and the hordes of people that fill every space in the touristy places. The town villages with a the small canals were really pretty nice and Suzhou is also well known for this pork knuckles dish which was heavenly.. save for some residual hair on the pig skin... hahahahha.
Got a massive bout of homesickness there in Suzhou too when we had this supposedly good steamboat buffet dinner. okay we were late and the restaurant didn't bother topping up whatever cooked food that was on the menu that day. Imagine the horror of going for a buffet and there's nothing much to choose from. To pile on the misery, they had coke on free flow but all the cans were left in the open... it was not cold and THERE WAS NO ICE. coke at room temperature is something that nobody deserves! And there I was sipping on such a can of coke, eating an assortment of very plain steamboat food (quail's eggs were the best stuff that day, go figure) when I suddenly thought of all the food I could cook, or even just doing my own steamboat will make the pathetic restaurant look like some roadside stall.
Well now that I'm back at home in Shanghai, it feels more at home and I'm glad to know the abundance of fresh and cheap ingredients which are easily accessible from Carrefour, just 5 minutes away from my house. With about S$6 I could cook a dish of vegetables, eggs and pork and it serves 3.
Work has been really good and my colleagues are all fantastic people. Still trying to know them better and learning more new things each day. The culture is also unbelievable and I'll need to dedicate more time to talk about it at a later time. I wonder why I am up at 4 when I should only be at 7 to go for work. Hope I won't do too much of a head ballet in office later.
More exciting stuff to look forward to over the weekend. Will try to update again soon!
