This time round, my personal agenda was just to eat the food that I haven't had since the last trip in 2008, and with the help of my friends, especially Mr Chu, I'm proud to say that those that I have missed have not disappointed me!
Furthermore, this trip I was equipped with a better camera, though the skills aren't there yet, I must say I liked quite alot of the street shots!
Needless to say, the highlight was always about the food.
To start off, I returned to Xu Liu Shan for my fix of their critically acclaimed mango deserts. As much as I love their 'Duo Mang Xiao Wan Zi', they have become what I believe the equivalent of Starbucks in deserts, which do not offer true value for money. The portions have become much smaller than what I remembered!
The favourite!
Of course, in a competitive market there exist competitors, and we do not need to look further than another up-and-coming rival in 'Man Ji' which offers their own fruit pancakes. I remembered the last time I ate here, my camera died and I didn't get to take more pictures. Not this time!
The banana pancake, filled with cream and banana topped with this melts-in-your-mouth skin. Eat to believe.
Apparently the thing that Man Ji built its name upon, extremely smooth Yang Zi Gan Lu. Mango pieces with sago and pomelo bits served in mango juice. To die for.
A creative new invention King told me about. Literally translated to mean 'ginger juice bangs into milk', its a chemical reaction between juice squeezed out of ginger, mixed with fresh milk, leading to an instant solidification of the milk into this jelly-like desert. I wonder how they actually thought of this!
On thursday, my Hong Kong friends whom I met on exchange brought me to this other very popular desert shop called 'Song Ji'. We had to wait for quite awhile before we actually got to go in. Truth be told, it was really the best among the 3! very very very very (okay I cannot stress how wonderful the deserts were) good deserts.
And right before the deserts, we also had a round of very good claypot rice, which happened to be just near the hotel I was staying in!
People certainly don't mind waiting hours just to get into the shop for some good food! Respect!
Never mind the lousy presentation, good taste supersedes all.
Its unbelievable how creative they get with food. Like a normal 'mei chai kou rou' put into a claypot!
Nothing beats being brought around by friends to share and enjoy good food, really.
On one hand I had new friends and company, but what is a Hong Kong trip without meeting Mr Chu King Hei, who was still there! Its many places revisited, but fun nonetheless! It doesn't feel like 3 years since the first visit!
Here's to many more good years of friendship and more dining in Hong Kong!
Among the many good food King brought me to included..
Beef horfun near his home, it just has to be oily to be good! hahaha
Roadside hawker stall with a variety of finger food, including fake shark fin soup, smelly toufu and pig intestines (FAVOURITE)
Saigon seafood. Though this time round we were kinda ripped off for not ordering the set meal. No more next time!
And YES, the steak that has been on my mind for the longest time since that eventful meal 3 years ago. I could never forget the taste and the texture of that simply amazing scotland beef steak. And I didn't even get to eat it when I was back in 2008. This time round I just couldn't miss it!
GODLIKE.
and and and who can forget about my favourite drink, SCHWEPPES ice-cream soda??
Sad to say, it seems like this drink's popularity has gone down abit. I was actually surprised that some eateries didn't serve it!
Other notable mentions during this 5 days worth of 'mission: mouth-exercise'...
Standard HK roast. Even in a fast food chain like Cafe de Coral, this still beats most roast in SG hands down.
Wanton mee, with prawns so big and crunchy, this is non existent over here. The noodles and soup top off an unbeatable combination.
When roast pork meets bittergourd on a mountain of rice decorated with black bean sauce, you get this overwhelming sensation of goodness. A surprise find in a rare hawker centre in Mongkok!
Che Zai Mian with DIY toppings. Of course I went for intestines and fish dumplings, some of my favourite, makes a good breakfast!
And something that is synonymous with Hong Kong, tim sum that is super affordable! This one was average, nothing out-of-this-world. I love those xiao long baos.
Yeah it was really a very happy thing to just eat and eat and eat, and sleep and wake up to continue the whole cycle. Sigh, but its back to school in another couple hours. I'm really looking forward to the numerous possible destinations I can go to this May. Meanwhile, shall continue to work hard in school, and then play harder this summer! YOSH!
